EU-backed Skills for Youth programme strengthens trade certification as graduates in plumbing, welding and sewing receive recognised qualifications.

Young EmaSwati are turning practical skills into recognised qualifications as graduates in plumbing, welding and sewing receive trade test certificates under the EU-funded Skills for Youth (S4Y) programme.The programme is supporting the Directorate for Industrial and Vocational Training (DIVT) to strengthen trade testing and certification, giving more young people an opportunity to gain qualifications aligned with labour-market needs.

Speaking at the ceremony, European Union Ambassador to Eswatini H.E. Karsten Mecklenburg said the certificates represent more than recognition of training.He said they provide young EmaSwati with “official, institutional recognition” for skills developed through vocational training and hands-on experience.“Your skills are the engine that will drive Eswatini’s economic growth, self-reliance and innovation,” Ambassador Mecklenburg told the graduates.»

A MILESTONE FOR TRADE TESTING

The Minister for Labour and Social Security highlighted the significance of the ceremony, noting that it is the first time trade test graduates have been formally celebrated through an award ceremony.The Minister also thanked the European Union for its support in making the recognition possible.

The ceremony underscores the growing importance of vocational skills in preparing young people for employment, entrepreneurship and a changing labour market.With formal certification, graduates can carry their practical abilities into the workplace with recognised credentials — turning skills acquired through training into opportunities for economic participation.

The Trade Test Certificate Handover ceremony was hosted at Sebenta Institute’s Auditorium and all the Ministry of Labour and Social Security officials were presents. Also in attendance was the IVT Board Chairperson Dr. Thandiwe Hlatshwako.
